Which means that on average just over 50% of the eligible voters end up electing someone only 1/4 (or less in some cases) of the people voted for. The sad (but not surprising) thing is that the majority of people who vote are 1st generation Canadians.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a voting system in the world that doesn't have some level of suckitude in-built.widdershinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04205462833259334647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663680578112260744.post-87323450215792119822011-04-08T19:20:19.707+09:302011-04-08T19:20:19.707+09:30I have just checked: "Voters can mark their f...I have just checked: "Voters can mark their first preference with a 1 and continue, if they wish to rank other candidates". So one can vote for just one candidate in the proposed new system. That's better, but I still think we should have a box labelled "None of the above".jeanfromcornwallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10062674591619616456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663680578112260744.post-38750831840304385662011-04-08T19:11:41.641+09:302011-04-08T19:11:41.641+09:30I find this horrifying. As I live in the UK I shall certainly be voting for "No Change" - not because I feel that first-past-the post is particularly good, but AV is no better, and will probably mean a higher proportion of the population getting what they didn't want.jeanfromcornwallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10062674591619616456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663680578112260744.post-31281645266052923412011-04-08T18:35:59.234+09:302011-04-08T18:35:59.234+09:30Yes, I've just read the leaflet we were sent. ...Yes, I've just read the leaflet we were sent.

I do dislike the current method as it has meant a government elected by less than half the voters, but I also distrust the people who are likely to control the new system.

Tricky...Neilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04109444229860301902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663680578112260744.post-29315470941305512852011-04-08T18:21:58.688+09:302011-04-08T18:21:58.688+09:30Neil I understand that the UK is voting on prefere...Neil I understand that the UK is voting on preferential voting but not compulsory preferential voting. Someone else can decide how someone else has voted and use it to let preferences go to someone else.
Sorry, not putting that terribly well but I am stunned. I thought somewhere like Australia would be above that sort of thing and as for doing it by legislation. Do I really live in a place that does this sort of thing? RosAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
